bio

I am Jordi Costa Plaza, born in Barcelona and now living in Sant Cugat del Vallès.

A single ‘explorarium’ does not satisfy my need, so the simultaneous diversity explores more widely.

Experience intellectual sensuality in the minimal way. The linear significance on the resident matter, alone or dyed, gives me just the right shifting texture that accommodates time and context.

Mireia Puente Vilardell‘s article published in February 2021 on my work in 2020 and 2021.

A long time ago I wrote an article about the work of the plastic artist Jordi Costa. While rereading it, I came across the following sentence:

“I would define Jordi Costa’s work as elegant, of beloved and honest simplicity, terribly intense and, above all, existentialist”.

Why did I highlight this fragment? Well, I found it quite interesting that, despite the relevant change in style, the essence of his work remains unchanged and this is precisely what makes it unmistakable, gives it its hallmark and shapes its creative process.

After a recent stage of absolute simplicity, silence and duality between a process of gathering and at the same time self-development, a return to the first stages in order to embrace everything, Jordi Costa once again makes a small unexpected turn of events

Currently, the work of this artist has been filled with veils, layers of significance, textures and nuances. He works with several paint layers and putty, subtly revealing the underlying layers that made it grow. And in the midst of this valuable substrate, shapes and geometries emerge, graphic representations that recall the blueprints of a new building or civilization and tell us about the future and hope.

With the whites of the previous stage, Jordi Costa paved the way, a space where passage of time has been embedded, condensed and restored, which tells us who we are and at the same time allows us to plan a new beginning. New forms that emerge white, pure and glowing and that, by contrast, become magnetic.

In the previous article I referred to the work of Jordi Costa as the product of a creative process closely linked to his life experience, a work told in first person. I truly believe that this is his main engine and his final destination. In his own words, it’s all about “calming the mind”.

The Mireia Puente Vilardells article published in May 2017 on my work in 2016 and 2017.

The other words…., those that seek to explain precisely what is inexplicable.

Sometimes I try to imagine what material would some people might be made of, associated with their personality. Yes, I know it may sound stupid, but I find it stimulating and fun. In the case of Jordi Costa I am certain that he would be made out of glass: elegant, transparent, with a sensitive and delicate appearance, even vulnerable, but with the incredible ability to allow through all the light that he receives making it shine on everyone nearby and even transforming it into a wide variety of color shades.

Jordi Costa’s work is the result of his life experience and the different cycles recount different stages of his life, including moments of suffering, happiness and (why not) passion.

A self-taught artist with a great talent for creativity, Costa has made experimentation his leitmotif. He has always been keen to talk about feelings in first person, achieving great honesty and authenticity. The pieces come from deep within himself and carrying a strong emotional charge.

Antoni Tàpies and Alberto Burri are his most relevant pictorial inspiration, very evident in his work, both in terms of technique and finishes. However, the artist clearly knows how to apply a distinctive style to his creations.

I would define Jordi Costa’s work as elegant, of beloved and honest simplicity, terribly intense and, above all, existentialist

The technique that makes it possible.

He works on both canvas and wood depending on the pictorial materials chosen for the work. When working with a lot of texture he chooses wood because this makes it stronger.

He uses pictorial techniques that are common among abstract expressionists or abstract informalists: Matter painting, ‘Grattage’, interventions in support, action painting and inclusion of new materials and / or objects. He also makes use of assembly, especially in his latest creations, where he adds antique nylon stockings, shoes, gloves or anything that can help him create the desired atmosphere.

The current stage: eroticism.

Jordi Costa now talks to us about femininity, fetishism, sensuality, eroticism, sometimes even introducing grotesque or aggressive themes.

Costa’s woman is multifaceted, complex, glamorous, delicate and resilient at the same time. A woman, perhaps imaginary or perhaps real, in any case a woman.

“Hiding from everything, sometimes».

Jordi Costa hides behind his paintings, but not with the intention to hide his concerns from us, but to express what he cannot explain in words, what he can only explain in the language of the soul, the purest, the most authentic, the most universal: Art.’
